President Tsai Ing-wen inspected the Zhubei Biomedical Park on June 26, listened to a briefing on the recent biomedical industry promotion plan, and visited several Si2C tutoring startup companies in the Biomedical Park. Among them, the “WeMED Biotech” established by the technical transfer of our school is also listed.
President Tsai expressed interest in the function and market of the medical device "Medullary cavity guide needle with lighting device (iMET)" developed by WeMED Biotech, and he also obtained the marketing approval of the US Food and Drug Administration in a short period of time for WeMED Biotech ( FDA 510k) expressed gratitude and encouragement.
President Tsai stated that the biomedical industry innovation plan has been launched and promoted with everyone’s efforts, and has achieved a lot of concrete progress. Last year (2016) Taiwan’s biotechnology industry had a turnover of 447.1 billion yuan, an increase of 6% over the previous year; among them, medical equipment , Health and well-being projects, grew by 6% and 7.5% respectively; the overall investment amount was 50.935 billion dollars, a growth of 5%.
President Tsai stated that Taiwan’s biotechnology R&D energy is increasingly vigorous. The government will combine diplomatic forces to fully support industrial development and export the industry to the world, and strive to lead Taiwan’s biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry as an Asian hub.
“We will use the national team’s approach, to support potential manufacturers, connect the channels of international pharmaceutical factories, and win export orders; we will also require the diplomatic system to be activated, through various international health, and various cooperation projects to export Taiwan’s biomedical industry overseas. "
The "Intra-Medullary Endo-Transilluminting Device (iMET)" medical equipment developed by Professor Zhu Weiqin’s laboratory of the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Institute) of our school can be accurate, fast and without use In the case of an external positioning device or an X-ray fluoroscope, perform the “interlocking nailing procedure” surgical screw positioning.
Since there is no additional radiation dose absorption, iMET Device can provide patients and medical personnel performing operations with a safer and more effective medical environment and quality, and can reduce the discomfort of fracture patients. Due to its market potential, in mid-2015 under the guidance of Si2C, "WeMed Biotech" was established, and at the same time it was stationed in Zhubei Biomedical Park; it was awarded the US FDA 510(k) on February 17 this year.
